Arsene Wenger explains why he didn't shake Alexis Sanchez's hand in training

Rewind to Deadline Day and Alexis Sanchez’s future at Arsenal looked dead in the water.

With the Gunners scrambling to procure Thomas Lemar, it looked certain that the Chilean winger would complete a shock move to Manchester City.

However, the move eventually fell through and it seems this season will be something of a victory lap for the ex-Barcelona man. Whether he moves in January or next summer, Arsene Wenger no longer has any power to prevent his departure.

With Arsenal out of the Champions League and looking unlikely to clamber back into the top four this season, you can’t exactly blame their star player.

The whole situation has seen Sanchez’s behaviour regularly placed under the microscope. After all, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be the same player when he knows himself that his time at Arsenal is numbered.

Sanchez has provided just one goal and a single assist for Arsenal so far this campaign.

In his defence, that single strike was quite the finish, arriving in the Europa League in a clash with Cologne. The Chilean will get another chance to impress in the latest round of Thursday night football against Red Star Belgrade, too.

That being said, ahead of the clash, Sanchez was involved in another innocuous incident that had fans scratching their head on Twitter.

A video emerged of Wenger and Sanchez seemingly snubbing each other for a handshake despite the fact the Frenchman greets all his players that very way before each session.

Augmented by paranoia, perhaps, but it’s weird nonetheless.

Wenger sought to explain the issue in a press conference with Jack Wilshere later that day, however.

As reported by the Mirror, Sanchez was one of the first players who arrived at training with Wenger running into his star man in the club medical centre. It was at that point that the pair shook hands and thus a second greeting on the pitch was unnecessary.

Regardless of how manager and player interact, the writing is on the wall.

How Arsenal respond to the loss of their biggest player will show a lot about the direction of the club and their ambitions in the Premier League.

Sanchez could be shaking hands over a contract at Manchester City, very soon.
