Ayo Jay talks breaking into the U.S market on Apple Beats 1 radio

Boy Wonder Ayo Jay stopped by the New York office housing Apple’s beats 1 radio where he gets talking about his music.
The singer chats with host Ebro Darden about his single ‘Your number’ the remix with Fetty Wap and also with Chris Brown and Kid Ink. Jay also talks about his new album and the meaning of the word ‘Fowosere’, a title of one of his singles.

He makes mention of his plans he has for his music in  the international market.

Here’s a transcript of the interview he had:

Ebro: We been trying to call it we even looked at the lyrics to the song. The original version is yours, then the Fetty Wap version.

AJ: When I dropped the original in 2013, I got signed to One Nation and then I moved back to Nigeria. I wanted to bring that new wave back to Nigeria. I tried to push it for a year and a half. It didn’t work out the way I thought it would work. Based on the comments from Soundcloud, YouTube, I knew the song was big outside of Nigeria so that’s why I put Fetty Wap on it last year. And we live in Jersey too, so it was kind of easy to get him on, we know the same people.

Ebro: Now you got the official remix with Chris Brown and Kid Ink

AJ: The Fetty Wap remix took off and it got me a record deal with RCA. RCA hooked up Kid Ink and Chris Brown.

Ebro: The process of which you describe getting the girls number in the song, that’s how you do it?

AJ: Yep. This song is a playful song for when you’re actually trying to get a girl and you ask for her number. Kids your age you get that IG.  At the end of the day you’re gonna ask for that number.

Ebro: What’s the word mean – ‘Fowosere’?

AJ: Ballin’, flashy. playing with money. The song’s more of a modern Afrobeat. It has that Hip hop vibe. With modern Afrobeat, we infuse a lot of foreign vibes – Hip hop, Trap, R&B and pop so we can sell it to everybody outside of Africa.

Ebro: I’m supposed to go to Nigeria and Ghana

AJ: December’s the best time to go. Most of the Nigerians here go back during Christmas. Nigeria is a very religious country – muslim, christian 50/50, so you know all the Christians are going back to celebrate. I will be going back in a week or two to see family, do shows and all that stuff.

AJ: I’m working on my first album anyway. 5 states. We’re trying to take it outside of New York.

I’ve been recording all year. Right now I’ve been doing promo for this record, ‘Your number’. Trying to get our record on the radio because we know it’s killing in New York. We’re trying to take it outside New York and take it to America.
