Swap deals rarely happen in modern football, however, Manchester United and Arsenal are on the verge of completing a pretty big one in the current transfer window.

Contract rebel Alexis Sanchez is close to joining Man United, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan, somewhat ostracised by manager Jose Mourinho, has now agreed a deal to move the other way.

Neither player featured on Saturday as Arsenal blew Crystal Palace away inside 22 minutes and United earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Burnley.

Anthony Martial latched onto Romelu Lukaku’s super pass to score the winner, but Paul Pogba’s ability to retain possession under pressure was vital in the latter stages.

The Frenchman put in another good display at Turf Moor, but what he is set to demand after Sanchez’s imminent arrival is sure to send shockwaves around the Man Utd boardroom.

The Mirror have reported that Pogba will demand that his current wages are doubled once the big-money transfer to bring Alexis to Old Trafford is complete.

When Pogba returned from Juventus in 2016, he agreed to a £167,000-a-week contract, which rose to £200,000 per week when Man Utd qualified for the Champions League.

So, a doubling of his salary to £400,000-a-week will match that of incoming Chilean Sanchez who, at 29, is already his country’s all-time leading scorer.

Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola is now in a position of strength and ready to tell United that £200,000-a-week is no longer enough for a player of his client’s quality and importance.

Not only is the 24-year-old seen by Mourinho as a future captain, but he’s also viewed as someone that the team can be based around for a significant period of time.

Contract negotiations are most likely to take place during the summer between United and Raiola, who also acts as an agent for Lukaku, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the outbound Mkhitaryan.

Raiola and Pogba’s wish being granted would result in a mega-deal, but Man United are well aware that they must secure the midfielder’s future throughout the peak years of his career.

The France international has registered three goals and nine assists in 14 league games so far this term and is set to star for his nation at this summer’s World Cup.
