Abia Govt to honour ex-Imo, Lagos Military Gov, Ndubuisi Kanu as Ikpeazu mourns

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, state government, heads of security agencies, members of the state judiciary, traditional rulers council and clergymen will on Thursday, October 14, 2021 hold commendation and tribute service in honour of the late ex-Military Governor of Old Imo and Lagos States, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu at Michael Okpara auditorium in umuahia, the state capital.

This was disclosed in a release signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Chris Ezem, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday, as part of activities rolled out to lay to rest the former military administrator.

According to the statement, Governor Ikpeazu invites the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, thee Speaker and Members of the State House of Assembly, State Head of Service,

Others include all Permanent Secretaries and their management team, State Chairman People’s Democratic Party and His Executives Member, all Local Government Chairmen, and their Deputies and Councilors, heads of para ministry etc.

DAILY POST reported that the retired Rear Admiral, Ndubuisi Kanu passed away at the age of 78 after a brief illness and hailed from Isiukwato Local government area of Abia state.

Meanwhile, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has expressed sadness on the passage of the ex-military Governor, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (Rtd).

He described the death of Kanu as a huge loss to the people of Abia State and Nigeria as a whole.

Ikpeazu in a statement by Onyebuchi Ememanka, his Chief Press Secretary, said that the late Naval officer was a great son of Abia state who excelled in every aspect of life.

The State Chief Executive recalled the sterling contributions of the Late Admiral as military governor of the old Imo state which includes the establishment of the old Imo Broadcasting Service in 1976.

He further condoled the family and the people of Isiukwato Local Government Area on the passage of Late Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu and assured that the State Government will liaise with the family and other stakeholders to ensure that he receives a befitting farewell.

Governor Ikpeazu also prayed the Almighty God to grant Late Kanu’s soul eternal

He partly said in the statement, “From his military career where he served meritoriously in the Navy to his appointment as member of the Supreme Military Council in 1975, to his appointment as the first Military Governor of the old Imo State in March 1976, Military Governor of Lagos State in 1977, amongst others, the Admiral’s life exemplified the best ideals of public service.

“Upon his retirement from the military, Kanu immersed himself in pro-democracy struggles and made massive contributions to the fight for the enthronement of democracy in our country through his involvement with NADECO. The democratic rule we enjoy today in Nigeria is one of the fruits of the sacrifices made by Kanu and other compatriots.

“The Late Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu never forgot his roots and made solid contributions to the political development of Abia, his home state. He was a huge reservoir of experience, knowledge and wise counsel which he gladly placed at our disposal as leaders of the State. His death has robbed us of one of our greatest sons. He was a proud son of Abia State and an outstanding Nigerian with impeccable credentials.”

The Late retired Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu will be buried at his hometown Ovim Community in Isiukwato Local government area, on Friday 15th day of October, 2021.
