The Imo State Government has explained reasons for arresting some priests and leaders of white garment churches in the state.

Following the crisis between the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB’s Eastern Security Network, ESN, and police in Orlu, the state government had arrested some leaders of the Cherubim and Seraphim and Sabbath Missions churches in Orlu area of the state.

However, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Cyprian Akaolisa, said the arrested church leaders were harbouring hoodlums fighting security operatives.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, the state capital, Akaolisa said: “If you investigate the activities of some of these churches, you will understand that over time, hoodlums establish and use such churches as front for their nefarious activities.

“We have records that armed robbers have been hanging out as pastors; in the night they will go for their operations but in the day they wear their garments and use such white garment churches.”

Recently, the military had attacked targeted camps of the IPOB-established ESN.

Reacting to the situation, the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma had admitted that he authorized the military operation.

Uzodinma had said he invited soldiers to Orlu to restore calm after members of IPOB killed policemen and citizens.
