Aston Villa manager, Steven Gerrard, is set to miss out on a reunion with former Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez, who is expected to join River Plate.

Gerrard played 95 times with Suarez during their time at Anfield.

The Villa boss had been heavily linked with a reunion with the Uruguay striker this summer, after the player’s two-year spell with Atletico Madrid ended.

However, it appears that Suarez will be plying his trade in South America for the first time since last playing for Nacional in 2006.

Mundo Deportivo reports Suarez is very close to signing for River Plate.

The 35-year-old is currently on vacation and has been seen partying with Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas, while he recovers from a knee injury.
