Onyeama, Chime preach peace as APC holds successful congress in Enugu’s 260 wards

The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Saturday, held a successful Congress in the 260 wards across the 17 Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The Congress was peaceful across the State.

DAILY POST Correspondent, who monitored the exercise, reports that a consensus option was adopted in many wards.

However, it could not work in some wards, including that of the foreign affairs minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, leading to a voting exercise.

The chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye had on Friday hinted that consensus option was already adopted in most of the wards.

At the Minister’s ward in Eke Ward 2, Udi Local Government Area, which is also the ward of the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, VON, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, two candidates contested for the chairmanship of the party. It was same for the other 26 members of the ward exco, as well as 5 delegates each for the local government and State Congress.

At the end of the exercise, Eze Philip was elected as the chairman with 626 votes, while Uche Aguba came a distant second with one vote.

Onyeama was earlier at the St. Paul’s College, Eke, venue of the Congress, where he advocated for peace among the members of the party.

He urged them to vote for candidates of their wards, adding that he would not impose anyone on them.

He said that he was impressed with the consciousness and willingness of the party members to participate in the process.

Onyeama called for unity among party members, adding that if the APC would do better in the state, “we must be united”.

Also, a former governor of the state, Mr Sullivan Chime described the process as peaceful.

Chime, who participated in his Udi/Agbudu Ward, Udi LGA commended the party members for conducting themselves in an orderly manner.

“You can see how our members came together. We held meetings to encourage them and this shows that we are one family.

“I believe that what happened here today is an indication of what happened across the wards in the state,” Chime said.

Meanwhile, the VON DG, Okechukwu, who was absent at the Congress in his ward, is said to be heading the party’s Congress Committee in Kebbi State.

In Nenwe Ward 1, Aninri Local Government Area, Chief Cyril Onu, Mr. Henry Aniobi, Mrs. Lorita Chikelu and Mr. Nwaru Stephen were elected ward Chairman, Secretary, Women Leader and Youth Leader, respectively.

The election witnessed the presence of Group Captain Joe Orji (Rtd.), among other chieftains of the party.

Orji urged the new executive to work for the success of the APC in Nenwe Ward 1, Aninri Local Government Area and Enugu State.

At the moment, the chairman of the APC in Enugu State, Dr. Nwoye, has urged members to continue their peaceful disposition, even as he commended their maturity during the exercise.

Also, a chieftain of the party, Barr. Godwin Onwusi described the ward Congress as most credible and transparent.
