The social organising secretary of the opposition PDP in Cross River State, Francis Ekeng, escaped an alleged assassination attempt when goons stormed his house in Akpabuyo LGA of the state.
A large number of suspected political thugs in Akpabuyo LGA of the state reportedly invaded the compound of the PDP stalwart on Sunday evening when they hoped he would have returned from church with members of his family.
Witnesses, among them neighbours, claimed the thugs, armed with weapons such as machetes, planks and firearms forced open Ekeng’s gate and manhandled the gateman who was stabbed multiple times and left for dead. The invading goons also vandalised properties in the politician’s compound.
An eyewitness told DAILY POST: “We don’t know why they came to vandalise Ekeng’s compound. Ekeng is a friendly and helpful politician in this community.
But when the thugs came, they beat up the security guard who lost much blood. They also broke Ekeng’s windows, damaged his cars and forced open his doors, looking for him.”
According to a family source Ekeng and his family did not return from church on time because “they had stopped over at a friend’s house for a birthday party.”
The source further confided that the wounded guard was rushed to a nearby hospital where he received a blood transfusion.
“As it is now, his chances of survival is 50-50,” said the source who said the assailants were not armed robbers.
Another family source who pleaded to be anonymous disclosed that Ekeng has reported the incident to the police.
Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo did not respond to calls to her phone.
DAILY POST recalls that former minister and now governorship candidate of Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Usani Usani was ambushed on his way to his hometown, Mkpani in Yakurr LGA last weekend. His assailants missed their mark and ended up killing two and injuring four others in his entourage.
