The amount of pain and grief that the family members of Uniben undergraduate, Late Uwaila Omozuwa, would be feeling right now, can only be imagined. According to reports, Uwaila Omozuwa was raped and beaten in a Redeemed Christian Church Of God in Benin City where she had gone to read on the 27th of May 2020. It was gathered that the security man who was supposed to resume work that day was the one who found Uwaila in a pool of blood when he entered the church. Uwaila eventually died on Saturday, the 30th of April after she didn’t recover from her unconsciousness.
Giving an update on the unfortunate incident, a TVC News Reporter based in Edo State, Paul Ezenwa revealed that the church where the incident happened is situated in a residential area and not a lonely place. He said, “The church is not located in a lonely environment; one would wonder how such act would take place in the church without anyone coming to her aid. It is really painful; one would wonder how the people who live around the church would not hear her scream.
For now, the police have not come up with anything valid. No arrest has been made as regards the death of Uwaila. The lawyers association in Edo state have said that they would ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.”
The reporter also shared what Uwaila’s father had to say about the death of his daughter. Ezenwa noted that Uwaila’s father, who used to be a traditionalist lamented that his late daughter was the one who made him to drop his traditional religion as a traditionalist to become a Christian and start going to church.
Read how the reporter narrated the story below, “The father of Uwaila told me that he cannot believe that his daughter was murdered in the same church that she (Uwaila) made him attend. He said that that he will not continue going to that church. The father said that he used to be a traditionalist but his daughter was the one who preached to him to become a Christian and start going to church. The mother has been attending the church with her for fifteen years and she has been a chorister in that church. The father said that when they were called about the occurrence, they reported the case to the police station immediately.”
The death of the Uwaila is a very bitter pill for her family members and friends to swallow. The 22-year-old lady who struggled to gain admission into the university after trying for some years died in a Chruch where she had gone to read. We all pray and hope that Uwa gets justice. A number of celebrities have shared their views on the matter. Many of them have said that there is a need for the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter properly.
